The country responsible for introducing Twenty20 cricket to the world is yet to make an impression at the Twenty20 World Cup. Fans will be hoping that England finds its rhythm at the 2010 T20 World Cup following a successful summer of cricket.
England will have a number of promising players to look to for big performances in the West Indies in 2010, with the likes of Alistair Cook and Craig Kieswetter emerging as powerful batsmen over the summer. An in-form Kevin Pietersen could also go a long way towards helping England to reach the latter stages of the tournament.
England entered the 2007 Twenty20 World Cup on the back of a disappointing performance at World Cup of Cricket in the Caribbean. Little was to change at the showpiece event for the shortened version of the game, as England managed to win only a single game against Group B minnows Zimbabwe.
This victory combined with a good run rate helped England qualify for the Super Eights. However, the English failed to win a match during the second stage of the 2007 Twenty20 World Cup, losing to South Africa, New Zealand and India before meekly exiting the tournament as the lowest placed team in their group.
In 2009 England once again made the Super Eights, despite suffering a shock defeat to the Netherlands in the group stage of the tournament. The English were ultimately not strong enough to make the top two of their Super Eights group, and failed to make the semifinals of the tournament.
England currently field a balanced team that should be capable of holding its own against any of the top sides in the world. The team’s performances tend to hinge on the form shown by leading batsman Kevin Pietersen, whose aggressive, innovative approach to the game is tailor-made for the demands of Twenty20 cricket.
The English are past masters of the flat performance, and rarely dominate their opponents when the opportunity arises. Fans will be hoping that the arrival of several new stars on the scene will remedy this situation as England has been lacking players capable of backing up the side’s stars in recent years.
