Bangladesh Twenty20 World Cup Team

Bangladesh Team - Twenty20 World CupBangladesh is slowly developing into a nation capable of challenging the higher ranked test playing nations on a regular basis. However this progress tends to feature the team making small advances followed by substantial reversals in form. Therefore while the Bangladeshis may pose a threat to stronger teams on their day, they are unlikely to make a significant impact on the 2010 Twenty20 World Cup.

Twenty20 World Cup History

The Bangladesh national cricket team made a promising debut at the 2007 Twenty20 World Cup. Placed in a team with South Africa and the West Indies, the Bangladeshis seemed destined for early elimination. However, an upset victory over the West Indies saw the Bangladesh team take second place in their group as they progressed to the Super Eight stage of the tournament.

Bangladesh’s good run of form came to an abrupt end in the Super Eights as the team failed to secure a single victory over the likes of Pakistan, Australia and Sri Lanka, and were beaten by substantial margins in each match.

The 2009 Twenty20 World Cup proved to be a dismal occasion for Bangladesh. The team failed to win a single one of its games at the tournament, and suffered the indignity of a defeat to associate nation, Ireland, as it failed to reach the Super 8s.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Bangladesh currently fields several promising young players who could emerge as world class cricketers if their talents are carefully nurtured. Mohammad Ashraful adds class to the Bangladesh batting line up and improves every year, while young fast bowler Mashrafe Bin Mortaza is maturing into an excellent tactical bowler.

The biggest weakness of the Bangladesh side is a lack of experience. While the side is improving, they struggle to deal with high pressure situations, and achieve their results sporadically in a way that does little to assist their cause over long campaigns. Maturity will come with time, but until Bangladesh has a strong, established squad, it will continue to struggle in all levels of the game.
