The West Indies has been selected at the host of the 2010 T20 World Cup, starting at the end of April. The Caribbean nation was selected to host the event following its successful hosting of the 2007 Cricket Council (International) Cricket World Cup, and West Indian fans are expected to respond well to the popular T20 format.
The tournament will be contested for a period of just over two weeks, starting on the 30th of April and ending on the 16th of May.
Three West Indian nations will be hosting games during the course of the 2010 T20 World Cup. Barbados will be hosting the majority of the tournament’s matches at the Kensington Oval after the nation’s population provided strong support for the Cricket World Cup in 2007. Guyana will also host several matches at the Providence Stadium, while St. Lucia is the other West Indian nation that will host T20 World Cup matches at the Beausejour Stadium.
The ten test playing nations qualified automatically for the 2010 Twenty20 World Cup. The remaining two teams competing in the tournament qualified via the 2010 Cricket Council (International) Twenty20 Qualifier, in which Ireland and Afghanistan secured places at the event.
The tournament will feature a Zimbabwean cricket team in 2010, following the withdrawal of that team from the 2009 edition of the tournament due to political pressure. The tournament will mark the first appearance of the rapidly improving Afghanistan team in a top tier international tournament.
