Uruguay snuck into the 2010 Football World Cup through the back door, beating Costa Rica in the CONMEBOL/CONCAF playoff after having finished 5th in the CONMEBOL qualifying zone.

The Uruguay football team has had little exposure to teams from beyond the borders of the CONMEBOL region in the last two years. Its results in the few friendlies played have been inconclusive, with the team mostly securing draws against quality opponents, whilst steamrolling weaker teams.

While Uruguay might produce some good results at the Football World Cup, it’s hard to imagine this team re-scaling summit of World Football and claiming its third title.
