Switzerland qualified for the 2010 Football World Cup by topping Group 2 in the UEFA region during qualifying. This group was populated by several lightweight teams, with only the Greek national team offering the Swiss any serious opposition.
The Swiss team has not been particularly convincing outside of qualifying either. The team failed to make inroads at the Euro2008 tournament, drawing with Italy and Bulgaria. While the Swiss appear to have the ability to grind out the occasional upset, it appears unlikely that they will progress beyond the group stages of the 2010 Football World Cup.
Nickname: Schweizer Nati
Coach: Ottmar Hitzfeld
Confederation: UEFA
Best World Cup Performance: Quarterfinals (1934, 1938, 1954)
Highest FIFA Ranking: 3
Key Players: Alexander Frei, Hakan Yakin
The Switzerland football team is priced well over 100/1 at most bookmakers, but appears to be accurately valued as a near-miracle would be required for this team to reach the final. It seems wiser to restrict bets on Switzerland to match markets, with bets on a Swiss clean sheet the order of the day given the team’s excellent defence which concedes less than a goal a game on average.
