An emerging star of the North Korean football team, Ryang Yong Gi looks to have the skills and class to make his mark as one of the top attacking midfielders at the 2010 Football World Cup tournament in South Africa.
Playing Position: Midfielder
Club: Vegalta Sendai
Jersey Number: 10
Ryang Yong-Gi was born in Osaka, Japan on January 27th 1982 to parents of North Korean extraction. As a youngster Ryang played his football for Japanese school teams, performing well enough to earn an invitation to trial for J2-League side, Vegalta Sendai, in 2004.
Ryang Yong-Gi did not take long to establish himself as a mainstay of the Vegalta Sendai football club. A regular goal scorer, Yong-Gi also proved to be a natural leader, securing the captain’s armband on nominations from the other players in his side.
Ryang also boasts an exceptional work ethic, and has made over 200 appearances for his club in five seasons. Hard work has not dampened the North Korean’s creative spark, as he has racked up over 40 goals at club level through attacking midfield play.
Ryang had to wait until 2008 to receive a call-up to the Korean national football team. Despite intense competition for places in the Korean midfield and attack, Ryang managed to impress during each of his performances for the national team, averaging almost a goal a game.
Ryang Yong-Gi is a top class midfielder who has the ability to move the ball forward with dribbling, but can also open up a game with precision passing from the midfield. Yong-Gi is also an accomplished set-piece player, and routinely scores off penalties and free kicks.
