Victor Obinna is on of the emerging stars of Nigerian football. The young striker is still learning the ropes in European club football but displayed maturity beyond his years in helping Nigeria to qualify for the 2010 Football World Cup.
Playing Position: Striker
Club: Malaga
Jersey Number: 18
Born in Jos, Nigeria on the 25th of March 1987, Victor Obinna learnt to play football on the streets of his hometown, following in the footsteps of many of Nigeria’s finest football players. At the age of 16 Obinna joined his first youth club, Plateau United.
Obinna would move from Plateau after a single season, signing with Kwara United for a single season before joining Nigerian national champions, Enyimba. The young striker attended trials in Europe during the same period, eventually securing a contract with Brazilian side, Internacional.
Obinna’s contract with Internacional would fall through before the player had an opportunity to debut for his club. Serie A club, Chievo, was quick to pick up the slack, signing the Nigerian on a three year contract in 2005.
Obinna did not enjoy much game time at Chievo during his first season due to contractual wrangles between the Serie A club and Internacional. The club was then relegated at the end of his second season in Verona, but Obinna was retained to help Chiavo secure promotion back to the Serie A.
Despite delays and frustration, Obinna still managed to show his worth by scoring impressive goals for his club. As a consequence he was approached by Inter Milan at the conclusion of the 2007/2008 season, but would make only nine appearances for the club before being loaned to La Liga outfit, Malaga.
While Obinna is still finding his feet in club football, he has been a mainstay of the Nigerian football team during qualifying for the 2010 Football World Cup. His accomplishments as an international player include scoring three goals for Nigeria during qualifying for the World Cup.
Victor Obinna is known for his relaxed playing style, which belies great strength and tactical awareness. His small stature prevents him from holding up the ball in front of goal, and has led to a playing style where he often chooses to take speculative shots at a distance from goal. Obinna favours playing down the left wing, but is not afraid of attempting to race past defenders down the middle of the pitch.
