Italy cruised into the 2010 World Cup finals by topping Group 8 in the UEFA qualifying zone. The Italians hardly had to break a sweat in a weak group comprising the likes of Cyprus, Montenegro and Bulgaria, completing qualification without having dropped a game.
The defending World Cup champions were, however, less convincing during their Confederations Cup campaign. The Italians suffered a shock defeat to Egypt and failed to reach the final of the tournament. The Italian football team is nothing if not unpredictable, and chances are we’re only likely to know their true potential once the World Cup starts.
Nickname: Azzuri
Coach: Marcello Lippi
Confederation: UEFA
Best World Cup Performance: Winners (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006)
Highest FIFA Ranking: 1
Key Players: Alberto Giraldino, Daniele di Rossi
Italy is trading at just over 10/1 in most antepost betting markets, providing decent value on each-way bets as a genuine contender for a place in the final.
Strong Italian defence combined with a skilled attack suggests that Italy games could be high-scoring affairs, with bets on under/over goal markets likely to produce good dividends during the 2010 Football World Cup.
