David Suazo is the glue that holds the Honduras national team’s attack together. A veteran of two World Cup qualifying campaigns, and an experienced Serie A campaigner, Suazo’s contribution will be crucial to the efforts of Honduras at the 2010 Football World Cup.
Playing Position: Striker
Club: Genoa
Jersey Number: 19
David Suazo was born in San Pedro Sula on the 5th of November 1979. Suazo grew up in a family with rich football traditions, giving him the opportunity to break into club football at an early age with the youth team of Honduran club, Marathon.
Suazo would later join Honduran first division rivals, Olimpia, after impressing local football bosses with his performances for the Honduran youth team at the FIFA Youth Championships. The striker made his first team debut at the age of 20, but would play less than a dozen games for his club before moving to the Serie A.
Serie B outfit, Cagliari, was the first foreign team to take note of Suazo’s skills, and signed the young striker in 1999. After four seasons at the club Suazo helped Cagliari to secure promotion to Serie A, scoring most of his goals as a reserve player.
Once Cagliari had arrived in the top flight, Suazo began to enjoy more playing time, and began to demonstrate the abilities that had originally brought him to Europe. In 2006 Suazo scored 22 goals for his club, winning the Serie A award for Best Foreign Player. The following season Suazo’s 18 league goals were credited with saving Cagliari from relegation.
Suazo’s prolific scoring rate captured the attention of the giants of Serie A football, and Inter Milan soon gave the Uruguayan the opportunity to leave his struggling club. Towards the end of 2007 Suazo joined Inter, but would struggle to maintain his scoring rate in a team loaded with gifted strikers.
Suazo’s dip in form saw him fall out of favour with Inter bosses, and he found himself loaned out to Portuguese club, Benfica, for the 2008/2009 season. Once again Suazo struggled to find his rhythm, and was transferred to Genoa after just one season in Portugal.
While Suazo’s club career has stagnated somewhat since leaving Cagliari, the striker has continued to put in strong performances for his national side. As a member of the Honduras football team, Suazo has scored four goals in qualifying for the 2010 Football World Cup.
David Suazo is a physical striker known for his toughness and fearless approach to defences. Suazo’s strength is accompanied by pace and a strong scoring instinct, and he has the ability to score off either foot. Suazo is most effective when playing alongside forwards who will play him into space.
