Michael Essien was born in Accra, Ghana, on the 3rd of December 1982. As a youngster Essien played for his school team, and only joined his first club, Liberty Professionals, after graduating from high school. By this time he had already represented his country at U-17 level.
While playing in Africa, Essien attracted interest from European clubs, and after just a year in his domestic league moved to France to play for Bastia. Essien started off his career as a defender, but was trialed in the midfield which proved to be a better fit for his skills.
Essien stayed at Bastia until 2003, when he was poached by Ligue 1 champions, Olympique Lyonnais. Essien flourished in Lyon, and in 2005 won the Player of the Year Award from French National Union of Professional Footballers.
Chelsea was next to knock on Essien’s door, and secured the player’s services for a record fee in 2005. At the time Essien was the most expensive acquisition in Chelsea’s history, and the most expensive African player in the sport’s history.
Essien has made regular appearances for the Ghana national team since 2006, playing for his country at that year’s Football World Cup. Playing in the 2008 African Cup of Nations for the Ghana football team, Michael Essien played a major role in his side’s progress to the semifinals. The midfielder went on to make 10 appearances during his side’s qualification for the 2010 Football World Cup.
Michael Essien is nicknamed the ‘Bison’ for his bulldozing tackles, work rate and aggressive playing style in the central midfield. Essien rarely scores for his team, but has demonstrated the ability to strike goals from distance several times during his career.
