Wayne Rooney was born in Liverpool in 1984. The son of two impoverished Irish immigrants, Rooney was a keen Everton supporter at an early age, and idolized Duncan Ferguson. Rooney made the Everton youth team at the age of 10, and excelled in his position.
Despite his obvious skill and success on the pitch for the Everton youth team, Rooney was unable to secure a contract due to his age, and continued to live in poverty whilst contributing to the Everton youth team.
Rooney made his first team debut at the age of 16, and became the youngest goal-scorer in the history of the Premier League by scoring the winning goal against Arsenal on the 19th of October 2002.
Wayne Rooney’s performance during his debut season in the Everton first team made waves in English football, and the young Liverpudlian soon found himself at the center of a bidding war between Newcastle and Manchester United after requesting a transfer from Everton.
Manchester United landed the young player’s services, and would benefit significantly from his presence in its squad over the next several league and European campaigns.
Since joining Manchester United, Rooney has been one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League. Rooney has averaged over 13 league goals a season since joining United, whilst averaging 10 goals a season in Europe.
Since joining the English national football team Wayne Rooney has been a critical member of the side, scoring every season since 2003. He has twice scored 6 goals in a single international season, and will be a key component of the England attack in South Africa in 2010.
Wayne Rooney is notorious for being a hot blooded player, a tendency that has got him on the wrong side of match officials a number of times during his career. However, many believe that his intensity during matches is just one expression of his undoubted commitment.
