Steven Gerrard Bio

Steven Gerrard was born in Whiston, Merseyside in 1980. As a youngster Gerrard played for the Whiston Juniors, and soon caught the eye of Liverpool talent scouts. Gerrard went on to spend several years at the Liverpool youth academy, also attending trials at a number of clubs. Liverpool went on to secure Gerrard’s services as a contracted player in 1997.

Steven Gerrard Career

Gerrard made his first team debut for Liverpool in 1998. Gerrard was slow to warm to his position, and felt out of depth as a replacement for Jamie Redknapp in the midfield. As a result Gerrard focused on playing a defensive role, and made little contribution on attack.

It took Gerrard until the turn of the millennium to find his stride as an attacking midfielder for the club, helping Liverpool to win the FA Cup and League Cup, along with the UEFA Cup. Within two seasons Gerrard’s leadership qualities were acknowledged as he was selected as team captain.

In 2004 Rafael Benitez took over the management of Liverpool, a move that sparked a renaissance at the club. Liverpool went on to win the 2004/2005 Champions League title, with Gerrard making a key contribution to his club’s success and winning the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year award as a result.

In the next four seasons, Gerrard began to make his presence felt as a goalscorer for the club, scoring an average of 11 goals per season and peaking with 16 goals in the 2008/2009 season as a strike partner to Fernando Torres.

As vice captain of the England national football team, Gerrard has also made important contributions at the international level, scoring over a dozen goals for his country. He briefly served as a vice-captain for England, before the position went to Rio Ferdinand.

Gerrard signaled his value to the national effort by scoring a brace of goals against Croatia during 2010 World Cup qualifying.

Steven Gerrard Playing Style

Steven Gerrard rates as one of the finest attacking midfielders on the planet. Gerrard combines excellent leadership skills with genuine pace, exquisite passing skills and formidable tackling. He is also a highly versatile player, and can cover virtually any position on the pitch.
