The $92 million Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit is a venue created specifically for the hosting of the 2010 Football World Cup in mind. The 44,000 capacity Mombela Stadium is the first world-class sports venue to be built in the Mpumulanga province, and will feature a unique cantilevered roof hung from 18 giraffe-shaped supports.
The Mbombela Stadium is the first new 2010 Football World Cup stadium to be completed on schedule. The stadium will provide optimal views of the world cup action, with the three tiered bowl designed to put all seats as close as possible to the playing field. The stadium also provides excellent protection from inclement weather, with the roof providing cover for 95% of the available seating.
Despite the the massive investment in the Mbombela Stadium for the 2010 Football World Cup, the venue will play a relatively minor role in the tournament, hosting 4 group stage games. The Mbombela Stadium is located within 6 kilometers of the town of Nelspruit, and will be accessible via public and private transport on match days. The stadium is also located in close proximity to the world famous Kruger National Park.
