Located in the central portion of South Africa, the Free State Stadium will serve as a host for several 2010 Football World Cup matches. The multi-purpose stadium serves as the home of two Bloemfontein based sports franchises, the Bloemfontein Celtic football team and the Free State Cheetahs rugby union team.
In preparation for the 2010 Football World Cup the Free State Stadium has undergone a $20 million upgrade, that has seen seating capacity increased to 45,000 spectators. The venue has also benefited from improvements to lighting, sound system and the construction of new electronic scoreboards.
The Free State Stadium will host 5 group stage matches during the 2010 Football World Cup, as well as a round of 16 match. The Free State Stadium is located 2km away from central Bloemfontein, and within minutes of the new team hotels constructed with the 2010 Football World Cup in mind. Access to the Free State Stadium is provided by rapid transit bus services as well as private transport.
