The Ellis Park Stadium in central Johannesburg is one of two stadiums in the city that will host 2010 Football World Cup matches. Usually used for both rugby and football matches, the Ellis Park Stadium will undergo a $50 refurbishment in the run-up to the 2010 Football World Cup that will see seating capacity increased to 65,000.
Opened in 1928, the Ellis Park Rugby stadium is perhaps best known for hosting the final of the 1995 Rugby World Cup, where South Africa won their first World Cup title. The stadium also made news when it became the first black-owned sports stadium in the country, and has developed a reputation as one of the best run sports venues in the country.
2010 Football World Cup Matches
The Ellis Park Stadium will host five first round game, one second round game and one quarterfinal during the 2010 Football World Cup. The stadium’s central location on the border of the Johannesburg central business district is certain to make it a popular World Cup venue. During the 2010 Football World Cup access to the Ellis Park Stadium will be facilitated by train, rapid transit bus services and private transport.
