Despite being considered a top-tier nation, Italy has yet to achieve significant success on either the European or the world stage. Whilst the Italians have proved that they can contain big sides, and beat the Celtic unions, their rugby is still in a developmental stage and has a long way to go before it can achieve top honours in a major tournament.

Italy’s been given a rough draw for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, and will need to beat one of Ireland or Australia to progress to the next round of the tournament. The Italians will be targeting the Irish for their win, but last managed to put a win over the men in green back in 1997.
The Italians shouldn’t have any problems putting away the USA or Russia, but its hard to see Italy reaching the quarters at the World Cup until they’re fortunate enough to be drawn in a pool with only one other Tier 1 team.
Italy has competed in every Rugby World Cup tournament to date, but has never progressed beyond the group stages. The Italians made history in 1987 by participating in the first ever Rugby World Cup match, but lost to New Zealand 70-6. They went on to record a solitary victory over Fiji and finished 3rd in their group.
In 1991 the Italians were once again drawn with the All Blacks in the Rugby World Cup, and again failed to progress beyond the group stages. There was more of the same on the cards for the Italians in 1995, as they finished 3rd in their group. There were encouraging signs at this tournament, however, as the Italians came close to defeating England in the group stages.
The 1999 Rugby World Cup was disastrous for Italy, as the team was once again drawn with New Zealand in the group stages and failed to win a single game. Italy would have felt a keen sense of deja vu after they were drawn with the All Blacks once again in 2003. Despite winning two matches, the Azzuri were once again shown the exit during the group stages.
In 2007 the Italians found themselves back with their old friends New Zealand in the group stages, and gave away their best chance to date of qualifying for the knockout rounds, when they lost to Scotland in an undisciplined performance.
During the past decade Italy has proven itself capable of producing world-class loose forwards – Marco Bergamasco and Sergio Parisse are good enough to make it into any team in the world. The team also displays a great spirit and passion in their game, and is capable of placing any team under pressure for sustained periods of play.
Italy has tended to lack line-breakers and decisive leadership amongst its backs. Whilst the forwards lay a solid platform for their backs, the back line tends to lack fluency and direction on attack. The team will need to find a top class fly half if it wishes to begin converting possession into points.
