England proved at the 2007 Rugby World Cup that they will always be a force to be reckoned with at the tournament. The English have reached the final of the tournament more times than any other team, and are the only European country to have won the event.

England doesn’t have the easiest of draws for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The side will have to take on both Argentina and Scotland in Pool C, and a loss against either side would most likely result in a quarterfinal encounter with hosts, New Zealand. Even if England does win the pool, it will have to take on a talented French side in the quarters.
The England forwards are going to hold the key to the side’s fortune, with the backs looking somewhat lacking in creativity. It’s therefore up to the eight men up front to create opportunities for tries, and secure the possession and territory England will need to bring Johnny Wilkinson’s metronomic boot into play.
While it’s going to be a real slog for England to reach the final, a look at their 2007 campaign shows there’s no way you can rule this gritty side out of a place in the final.
England’s performance at the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987 was mediocre at best, with the English qualifying for the knockout stages before losing to Wales in the quarterfinals. However, the 1991 Rugby World Cup was a different story altogether as England progressed to the final for the first time, before losing to Australia 12-6.
England were impressive again at the 1995 Rugby World Cup, reaching the semi-finals with a win over Australia, before running into rampant All Blacks winger Jonah Lomu in the semifinals and losing 45-29. At the 1999 Rugby World Cup England reached the quarterfinals before the ‘boot of God’ put pay to their title hopes, when Jannie de Beer scored 5 drop-goals, and South Africa beat the English in the quarterfinals.
England’s moment of destiny came at the 2003 Rugby World Cup, when years of careful planning paid off as England reached the final of the tournament for the second time, and went on to defeat Australia 20-17 thanks to a last minute drop kick by Johnny Wilkinson.
Four years later England travelled to France with a side in the process of rebuilding. Despite entering the tournament as outsiders after heavy defeats from South Africa in the June/July test window, England put in a series of heroic performances in the knockout rounds of the tournament, defeating Australia in the quarterfinals and France in the semifinals.
These results enabled England to become the only country to reach two consecutive world cup finals. However, it was not to be England’s night, as a Matthew Tait try was controversially disallowed, and the Springboks went on to grind out a lacklustre win at the Stade France.
England has reached three Rugby World Cup finals by consistently fielding balanced, disciplined teams that don’t get overwhelmed by the occasion. Planning, patience and excellent organisation, complimented by moments of individual brilliance, are what allow England to perform so impressively at the highest level.
It isn’t easy to find chinks in the England armour, however, there is little doubt that the side is likely to struggle to replace the members of the class of 2003 as they head into retirement. There are also questions about the senior management of English rugby, whose behaviour and policies have often been described as counterproductive and obstructive.
