Argentina 2011 Rugby World Cup Team

A steadily improving Argentina was the surprise package at the 2007 Rugby World Cup, and has proved in recent years that they are capable of taking on, and beating, the big names in international rugby.

2011 Rugby World Cup

Argentina finds itself in the only pool to feature three top-ten teams, with both Georgia and Romania also capable of putting up a fight. The Argentineans will be focusing on a win against England to boost themselves into the quarterfinals, however, they’ll also need to put away a solid Scotland side to take top spot in Pool B.

Should the Argentineans top Group B, they’ll set up a likely quarterfinal against a French side they’ve had no problems beating in previous seasons. We’ve seen little of Argentina since they finished 3rd in the 2007 Rugby World Cup, and only time will tell if this team is capable of matching the feats of its predecessor.

Rugby World Cup History

Argentina has played in every Rugby World Cup tournament to date, making their debut at the 1987 Rugby World Cup. The side enjoyed limited success in the first three editions of the tournament, and never managed to progress past the group stages, despite winning several group games.

By 1999 Argentina was developing into a first rate team, and made their first Rugby World Cup breakthrough in that tournament by beating Ireland to reach the quarterfinals. In 2003 the tables were turned as Ireland defeated Argentina in the group stages, thereby preventing the Pumas from reaching the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals.

The 2007 Rugby World Cup was by far Argentina’s most successful campaign. The Pumas won the opening match of the tournament against France, and went on to reach the semi-finals, beating Ireland and Scotland in the process.

A side full of injured players took on eventual champions South Africa in the semi-final and lost the match 37-13. The Pumas, however, finished the tournament on a high by crushing France 34-10 in the 3rd place playoff in Paris.

Strengths

For decades Argentina has been privileged to field a massive and intimidating forward pack. The team is rock-solid in the scrums, and with the emergence of gifted backs like Horacio Agulla and Felipe Contempomi, now has the ability to convert forward dominance into tries. The team also plays with total passion and commitment, a factor that has helped Argentina upset the odds on several occasions.

Weaknesses

At present Argentina’s biggest weakness is at an organisational rather than playing level. The country lacks strength in depth due to the absence of a professional league at home, and draws mostly on a small group of players plying their trade in Europe. Once Argentina develops full professional structures, with the ability to provide sufficient players for the team to survive a World Cup campaign, the Pumas will become a force to be reckoned with in the Rugby World Cup.
