Once an emerging power in international cricket, Zimbabwean cricket has been severely destabilised during the past decade by the country’s turbulent political situation. Not only has the Southern African country lost all its top players but it has also been suspended from playing test cricket, and currently lacks even a first class domestic tournament.

2011 Cricket World Cup
In spite of Zimbabwean cricket having been in a crisis for several years, there is some hope that the national team will be competitive at the 2011 Cricket World Cup. The current squad features several talented youngsters who, if given the opportunity to enjoy regular top-flight competition, have the potential to develop into world-class players.
Cricket World Cup History
Zimbabwe did not appear in the Cricket World Cup until the third edition of the tournament in 1983. Despite being eliminated in the 1st round, Zimbabwe left the tournament having achieved an impressive upset victory over a highly rated Australian cricket team.
The Zimbabwean team was again eliminated in the 1st round of the World Cup when they made their second appearance at the tournament in 1987. More of the same was to follow at the 1992 Cricket World Cup, although the Zimbabweans exited the tournament with their dignity intact, after defeating eventual finalists England during the group stage of the event.
After another first round exit at the 1996 Cricket World Cup, Zimbabwe put in their best performance in a World Cup at the 1999 tournament in England. The Zimbabweans defeated India, South Africa and Kenya in the group stage of the tournament, to qualify for the Super Sixes stage of the tournament.
The Zimbabweans failed to win another match at the event, losing out on a place in the semifinals by virtue of New Zealand’s superior net run rate. In the 2003 Cricket World Cup, Zimbabwe reached the Super Sixes again, assisted by a walkover win against England, as well as victories over Namibia and the Netherlands.
In the Super Sixes, the Zimbabweans once again failed to win a match, and exited the tournament in sixth place.
The Zimbabwean team that travelled to the 2007 Cricket World Cup was a shadow of the team that had impressed at the 1999 tournament. Inexperienced and unsettled by political turmoil at home, the Zimbabweans also found themselves in a group alongside Pakistan, the West Indies and Ireland. The Zimbabweans lost every match they played to finish last in their group.
