Once the most feared team in international cricket, the West Indies entered a period of steady decline in the mid 1990s. Whilst the West Indies are yet to reclaim the summit of international cricket, there are signs that this proud cricketing nation is recovering, with a new generation of talented, motivated young players coming to the fore.

2011 Cricket World Cup
West Indian cricket fans will be expecting a great deal from their team at the 2011 Cricket World Cup. The last several years have seen the re-emergence of the West Indies’ famous pace attack as well as several batsmen gifted with the region’s unique ‘calypso cricket’ style. The biggest obstacle to West Indian success will be a lack of self –belief, which is the product of a long period of underachievement on the international stage.
Cricket World Cup History
The West Indies earned the distinction of winning the first Cricket World Cup, which was held in England in 1975. A side bristling with many of West Indian cricket’s most famous players, reached the final of the tournament and proceeded to defeat Australia by 17 runs and to lift the Prudential Cup.
In 1979 the West Indies returned to England to defend their title. The West Indians did so successfully with one of the strongest teams ever to play for the region, handing England a comprehensive 95 run defeat in the final of the tournament. In 1983 the West Indies achieved their 3rd final appearance in 3 tournaments, but lost to India in what is regarded as one of the biggest upsets in Cricket World Cup history.
The 1987 Cricket World Cup arrived along with the first signs of rot in West Indian cricket, as the West Indies were eliminated in the first round of the tournament. History repeated itself 5 years later as the West Indies exited the 1992 Cricket World Cup in the first round.
In 1996 the West Indies showed signs of improvement, progressing to the semi-finals for the first time in over a decade, and beating a strong South African team in the process. Unfortunately, it was not to be for the West Indies, as a batting collapse cost them their semifinal against Australia.
The next three Cricket World Cups culminated in West Indian cricket reaching a nadir, as the team suffered the departure of some of its most experienced players, and new talent failed to emerge to replace them. The West Indies were eliminated from both the 1999 and 2003 Cricket World Cups in the first round, and were disappointing again in 2007, when they were eliminated in the second round of the tournament despite playing in front of a home crowd.
