The English have the dubious distinction of being the most notorious under-performers in the history of World Cup Cricket. Despite having hosted the tournament on four occasions, England has never managed to win the Cricket World Cup, and have had to settle for three losing appearances in World Cup finals.

2011 Cricket World Cup
The English team is the perennial under-performer of international cricket, and will be attempting to put this reputation behind them at the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Despite the fact that the English have managed to hold their own against all the top ranked sides in recent years, the player base still appears to lack the cutting edge required to win a Cricket World Cup tournament.
Cricket World Cup History
England reached the semi-finals of the first Cricket World Cup in 1975, before being beaten by Australia after setting a paltry target of 93 runs. An improved England team was in action at the 1979 Cricket World Cup, and defeated Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan on the way to the final. There the English met with a rampant West Indian pace attack, which ripped through their batting order to record an 85 run win over them.
England remained one of the form teams in international cricket throughout the 1980s, reaching the semifinals of the 1983 Cricket World Cup, before losing to India. In 1987 England reached the final of the Cricket World Cup for the second time, setting up a rematch of the 1975 semifinal. History repeated itself as Australia defeated England, before going on to win its first Cricket World Cup.
The 1990s began with England reaching the final of the Cricket World Cup for the third time. The English finished the gruelling round-robin stage of the tournament in 2nd place behind New Zealand. Unfortunately for the English, the Pakistani team hit peak form in the final, and the English lost their best ever opportunity to win the tournament.
English cricket headed into a period of gentle decline in the late 1990s and new millenium, as several legendary English players retired from the game. England failed to progress beyond the first round of both the 1999 and 2003 Cricket World Cups, and only managed to reach the super eight stage of the 2007 tournament in which they finished in 5th place, thereby losing out on a place in the semifinals.
