Bangladesh National Cricket Team

Whilst Bangladesh’s record in test cricket leaves much to be desired, the country has demonstrated a steady improvement in the one-day game since being granted permanent One Day International status in 1997. This small but proud cricketing nation is some way off challenging for top honours in international cricket, but is becoming increasingly capable of knocking over higher ranked teams.

2011 Cricket World Cup

Bangladesh - Cricket World CupAs one of the hosts of the 2011 Cricket World Cup, Bangladesh will be hoping that home advantage will provide the inspiration the team needs in order to put together a series of winning performances against top ranked opposition. Much will depend on how well the young team that performed so well at the 2007 Cricket World Cup is prepared for their first home World Cup.

Cricket World Cup History

Bangladesh was ineligible for the first four editions of the Cricket World Cup. In 1997 Bangladesh won the Cricket Council (International) Trophy in Malaysia, thereby securing qualification for the Cricket World Cup for the first time in their history.

The Bangladeshis did not disappoint their fans on debut, defeating former champions Pakistan in the group stages of the tournament. The Bangladesh team also defeated fellow minnow Scotland, to finish 5th in their group.

At the 2003 Cricket World Cup in South Africa, the Bangladesh national cricket team scored a duck by failing to win a single match. Most disappointing for the Bangladesh team, was failures against teams of part-timers from Canada and Kenya.

In 2007 Bangladesh compensated for their poor showing at the 2003 tournament with their best Cricket World Cup performance to date. The Bangladeshis finished second in their group by defeating India and Bermuda, then finished the Super Eights part of the tournament in 7th place with one win.

That single win was definitely the finest in the history of the Bangladesh national cricket team’s history, as they humbled South Africa in a 67 run victory. Ironically, Bangladesh followed this result up with a disappointing loss to Ireland in their final match of the tournament.
