The 2010 World Cup is building to a climax with the semifinals of the event set to take place on the 5th and 6th of July in Cape Town and Durban. Three European teams and one South American team are left in the draw, and predicting which of these will survive to participate in the year’s biggest sporting event is no easy matter.
Tuesday 06/07: Netherlands vs. Uruguay Prediction
The Netherlands takes on Uruguay in the first 2010 Football World Cup semifinal on Tuesday in Cape Town.
The Dutch left little doubt over their class after dispatching Brazil in the quarterfinals. The Dutch team has shown excellent composure throughout the World Cup, and demonstrated its determination and staying power to come back from a one goal deficit to beat the team that had been trading as the favourite to win the World Cup.
Uruguay doesn’t appear to be in quite the same class as the Dutch. A favourable draw and a blatant, cynical hand ball in the team’s match against Ghana, have seen the Uruguayans reach the semifinals, but barring another cynical display of gamesmanship against the Dutch it’s hard to see the South Americans surviving against one of the most professional teams at the tournament.
We see this match going to the Netherlands, but a strong Uruguayan defence could do enough to push the match into extra-time, or even penalties.
Tuesday 07/07: Spain vs. Germany Prediction
Spain and Germany meet in a rematch of the Euro2008 final in Durban on Wednesday evening.
Germany has been a force unto itself at the 2010 Football World Cup, and made the beating of Argentina look like child’s play on Saturday afternoon. The Germans have scored eight goals in their last two matches, but fans will be wondering whether the team can maintain its momentum as it comes up against arguably the finest team in world football.
Spain does not seem to have hit top form at the 2010 Football World Cup, and has been forced to grind out low-scoring wins to reach the penultimate round of the tournament. If Spain sparks into top form it will be more than a match for Germany, but its recent form suggests that it does not deserve its favourite status in the 2010 Football World Cup betting markets.
We’d have to go with Germany winning this match, and an early goal from the well-oiled German attack would probably do enough to end Spain’s World Cup campaign.
