Roulette is a popular casino game that originated in France. The word ‘roulette’ means small wheel, and refers to the slotted, coloured, numbered wheel used in the game. Roulette’s popularity is based on the fact that it is can accommodate a wide variety of skill levels and bet types, from basic bets for beginners to the complex systems devised by expert players.
Roulette play takes place at a roulette table featuring a slotted wheel and a betting area printed with the various betting options open to players. Players are able to place numerous bets on the table, betting on different outcomes.
Once all bets have been placed by participating players, the dealer will spin the roulette wheel one direction and spin a metal ball in the opposite direction. The wheel and ball gradually decelerate until the ball settles in one of the slots in the roulette wheel.
The two versions of roulette, American and European, differ according to the number of slots on the roulette wheel. European roulette wheels have 37 slots numbered 0 to 36, while American roulette wheels have 38 slots numbered 0 to 36, with an additional slot marked 00.
Two basic betting options are available to roulette players.
A number of additional betting options are available at some roulette tables and most online casinos. Generally these options will simply allow players to bet on specific combinations of numbers at a variety of odds.
Roulette inspires more strategies than any other casino game. Often players devise their own strategies to beat the house, with mixed results. Generally the best way to play roulette is to mix up bets, attempting a variety of betting approaches.
