As the history has shown, blackjack is a game which requires some skill, in addition to that little bit of luck. The basic rules are very straightforward and the nickname of the game, 21 pretty much says it all. The goal is to get as high a value as possible without going over 21, or what is also known as “busting”. If you bust then the dealer wins the hand.
Card values in Blackjack
In case of an Ace you will not need to specify whether the Ace is worth 1 or 11, as it is assumed to always have the value that makes a best Blackjack hand.
Calling the shots
“Hitting” or “hit” is the term for suggesting you want the dealer to deal you another card. “Splitting” is when you are dealt two identical cards on the first deal, which you can divide into two separate hands and games. If you “split” you must add another identical bet to the additional hand. “Standing” is when the player has reached his target hand and is not interested in being dealt anymore cards. Though, if the player decides to “stand” other players can still continue “hitting”. “Doubling down” is an option the player can choose after he is dealt his first two cards, if he thinks he has a chance in winning and wants to raise the stakes.
For example: if he needs a 10 to blackjack, the odds are for his advantage. “Insurance” is when the dealer deals the first card and it is an ace. Only then you can buy insurance for half the sum you originally betted. If the dealer “blackjacks” you don’t lose any money and get your money back but if he loses, you lose your bet plus the insurance.
Getting Started
The objective of this game is quite easy. One needs to have a higher hand than the dealer without busting. But before you can be dealt any cards, you must place a bet according to the tables minimum bet (or more) by laying the chips on the table. Once you bet, the dealer will deal you two random cards from the deck, face up. The dealer also deals himself two cards, one facing up and the other facing down.
As the object of the game is to get to a value total closest to 21 without busting, “hitting” the dealer is the way you can add the cards up, hopefully making 21, Blackjack. So if your first two cards the dealer dealt you are 10 and jack (20) you would hope for an ace on the next “hit” (1), making the sum of 21. Obviously if the sum is higher, you lose or “bust”. Even though there are other players and hands dealt on the table, the game is to be played solo against the dealer only. If you win, it doesn’t matter or affect you if the other players at the table won or lost.
After all the players are dealt their cards the dealer reveals his cards. If his hand total is under 17 he must deal himself another card. If your sum is more than dealers and fewer than 21 then you are entitled to your original bet back plus the sum of the first original bet. If you blackjack (21) you are entitled to 1.5 multiplied by your original bet. To get a Blackjack, or have a natural, is to have a total of 21 in your first two cards. Therefore a Blackjack would be an Ace and one of the cards valued at 10. When and if you split an ace, and later get a 10 value card dealt on one of your split, it is not a Blackjack. It is a total of 21. Telling the difference between these two winnings is very important as the payouts are totally different. Blackjack pays the player odds of 3 to 2, so if a bet of $10 wins, he will receive $15.
