The rise of betting exchanges on the internet has opened up the exciting world of lay betting for racing betting enthusiasts. While in the past punters were restricted to backing a small number of racehorses in each race they now have the opportunity to bet against any horse in the field winning – effectively taking over the role of bookmakers.
While only one horse can win any given race, there will be up to three dozen losers. Simple arithmetic suggests that lay betting is far more effective than backing a single horse, as you can effectively cover ever possible outcome other than the selection winning with a single bet.
Lay betting is available from online betting exchanges, including popular exchanges like Betfair and WBX. Once you’ve opened an account you will have access to dozens of daily racing markets as well as antepost betting markets.
Lay betting allows punters to bet against a horse winning a race by accepting or setting odds against that horse winning the race.
When you place a lay bet you are asked to enter the stake you’d like to lay, and are then presented with your liability (the amount you’ll pay out if your selection wins) by the betting exchange. If the selection loses you’ll win the stake you entered on the betting slip, if the selection wins, you’ll pay the liability indicated on the betting slip.
For more information and example of lay betting read our guides to betting exchanges, lay betting and trading.
You can lay horses on any race, however, there are races where using lay betting is a far more effective strategy than backing horses to win or finish placed.
For more information on which racing formats provide the best lay betting opportunities we suggest you look at our suggestions on when to lay horses.
