All of Britain will be waiting impatiently for the start of the delayed grand slam final at Flushing Meadows this afternoon when their number one man will walk out onto centre court at the Arthur Ashe Stadium brimming with confidence after his crushing defeat of Rafael Nadal yesterday.
Murray’s First Bite at the Grand Slam Cherry
It will be Murray’s first bite of a grand slam cherry and the odds are very much in his favour. He has met his opponent, former number one, Roger Federer, three times in his career and surprisingly has the better results - 2-1. All the contests have been on hard court and their latest battle took place in Dubai earlier this year when Murray cruised to an easy three set victory.
Murray has played some of his best tennis leading into the finals of the US Open but the one problem that may hamper his rise up the ATP ranking ladder even further could be his fitness levels. He has not had the advantage of a full rest day like his rival, Federer, and his fitness has often been questioned by tennis pundits.
Murray Moves to Number Four!
Whatever the outcome of today’s final, Murray will reach a career high on the ATP ranking, rising to number four, one adrfit of Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.
UK bookmaker, betfred, is offering a sumptious range of betting options on the US Open Men’s Final - twenty in total- including the fastest serve and whether there will be a tie break. After his remarkable performance against the French Open, Wimbledon and Beijing Olympic champion, Murray clearly has the whole of Britain backing him with odds of 6/4 compared to Roger Federer at 8/15.

Not so long ago the thought of either Williams’ sister claiming one more grand slam to add to their glittering array of majors titles would have been relegated to dream land but with the recent demise of the number one seed, Ana Ivanovic, at the US Open and the no show of the 2006 champion, Maria Sharapova, the odds are clearly in one of their favours.
Who will be mentally stronger on the Day?
The two will meet this evening at the Arthur Ashe Stadium and, to be honest, either of them could win the quarter final - they are particularly well-matched, both preferring the aggressive approach to the game and it will all probably boil down to which of the sisters is physically fitter and mentally stronger on the day.
Venus showed the world she is not quite ready to be written off when she claimed her fifth Wimbledon singles crown and then went on to win the doubles as well with her little sister, her prime adversary in today’s clash at Flushing Meadows. She did make short work of Serena in London, winning the title in straight sets, but today will be an entirely different challenge.
Serena showing Form
Although Serena has not won any majors this year, she is cleary playing some formidable tennis at the moment, having bagged three WTA titles this season already. Both sisters have won in New York on two occasions and Serena has claimed one more grand slam title than her sister, Venus - to date she has claimed eight titles at the majors of tennis.
Local online bookmaker, sportingbet, has a variety of bets on the outcome of the match including the total number of games, the first set winner and odds on each set. Current odds on the match are Serena 3/4 & Venus 19/20.

Sixth seed, Andy Murray, will have to up the ante if he is to churn out his best performance at Flushing Meadows to date when he takes on one of the rising stars of the tennis fraternity, the young Argentine, Juan Martin Del Potro, in the quarter finals tomorrow.
Del Potro may be the new kid on the ATP block but he has astounded his supporters by claiming four tour titles in as many outings - and his opponents are no slouches with the racket. He pulled off consecutive wins at Stuttgart, Kitzbuhl, Los Angeles and Washington downing Richard Gasquet, Jurgen Melzer, Andy Roddick and Victor Troicki respectively.
He is also in scintillating company, following hot on the heels of the newly crowned King of tennis, Rafael Nadal, with the second longest winning streak of the current season - 23 match wins in five tournaments!
Del Potro is currently ranked 17th on the ATP ranking and is the youngest member of the elite top twenty of the tour, so Murray will have to play extremely well to stay in contention for the US Open title in New York. The two have met once before at the Rome Masters earlier this season and although Murray claimed the win it wasn’t really a true reflection of the rivalry between the two as Del Potro was forced to retire.
Leading bookmaker, Boylesports, is offering a varied selection of odds on the quarter final clash between the two including the following odds on a win - Juan Martin Del Potro 7/4 & Andy Murray 4/9.

All the top seeds in the women’s draw should romp home in the opening round of the US Open today unless they too have found the extraordinary volume of competitive tennis due to the Bejing Olympics has sapped some of their energy, verve and fervour!
Ivanovic should go through without too much Ado!
French Open champion and top seed for the tournament, Ana Ivanovic starts her campaign against relative no-name, Vera Dushevina, who is unseeded for the event and currently ranked 57th on the WTA rankings. The young Russian is yet to claim a singles title on the tour and her best results at the US Open have been third round departures in 2004 and 2007. The two have met on court five times but the only time Dushevina has managed to silence the fiery Serb was way back in 2005 in Dubai, since then it has been the Ivanovic Show!
Williams’ Sisters could be too Powerful
Fourth seed, and double US Open champion, Serena Williams should be able to crush her opponent, Kateryna Bondarenko, without too much fuss. The young woman from the Ukraine is unseeded in New York and is currently ranked 46th. Sister, Venus, who confounded her critics by claiming Wimbledon this year and is seeded 7th, should have no problem with Australia’s Samantha Stosur.
Leading UK bookmaker, William Hill, is offering the following odds on the first round of the US Open - Ivanovic 1/9 versus Dushevina 5/1; Serena 1/20 versus Bondarenko 8/1; Venus 1/16 versus Stosur 7/1.

With the surprise closure of the Henin era at the beginning of the season and the news Russian ‘Wondergirl’, Maria Sharapova, will not be contesting the final grand slam of the year in New York due to a recurring shoulder injury, pundits will have to gaze hard into the crystal ball to find a hint of who may claim the crown at Flushing Meadows!
Three Different Grand Slam Winners Already!
This year’s grand slam results have been a real mixed bag of tricks - for the first time in a quite a while there is no one dominant player ruthlessly claiming all the WTA and grand slam titles with gay abandon. Already, this year, we have seen three different grand slam champions - Sharapova in Melbourne, Ivanovic in Paris and veteran, Venus, in London.
The defending champion of the US Open, Justine Henin, has quit the professional game and none of the top ranked ladies have really put their hands up and grabbed the top spot by the jugular.
Ana Hanging on to Top Spot by Default
Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic is currently at the top of the ranking table but mainly by default - since her brilliance in the French, Ana has failed to impress. She crashed out of Wimbledon and the Canada Masters in the third round and has not played since, citing a thumb injury. She was propelled back to the top spot mainly because her nearest rival and the current number two and second seed for the US Open, Jelena Jankovic, has had a number of poor results!
International bookmaker, PartyBets, is offering the following odds on the outright winner of the final slam of the year - Ana Ivanovic 4/1; Jelena Jankovic 9/1; Serena Williams 11/4 and Venus Williams 16/5!
