Britain’s rising star, Andy Murray, should be able to tame his Italian opponent, Simone Bolleli, in the second round of the Madrid Masters today without too much effort. The young Scot is clearly playing his best tennis this season, having rocketed up to the 4th position on the ATP rankings.
Murray Gunning for fourth Masters Series Title
Murray will be gunning for his fourth Masters Series win this season alone, having already claimed the titles at Cincinnati, Doha and Marseilles. He stunned the tennis fraternity when he overcame some formidable opponents to meet Roger Federer in the final of the US Open and although he didn’t claim his maiden grand slam, he certainly gave the former world number one a run for his money!
Murray and Bolleli have never met in a match before but the young Italian is currently ranked 43rd on the world rankings and is still shy of an ATP title. There is little doubt Murray will progress to the next round and if history repeats itself, he may well be able to pocket another title and a healthy slice of the 2.27 million Euro prize fund!
Online sports bookmaker, boylesports, is currently offering odds on all the showdowns in Madrid and has Murray 2/13 to win against Simone Bolleli - 22/5 - on the ‘Pista Central’ later today.

Women’s tennis has been in disarray since the surprise retirement of Justine Henin at the beginning of the season, with no one player sticking up their hand to claim the coveted top spot. We have seen 4 different grand slam winners this season, something that hasn’t happened too often on the professional circuit in the past.
Serb beauty, Ana Ivanovic, was tipped to take the throne in Henin’s absence but apart from her French Open crown she has not dominated by any manner of means, in fact, since her maiden majors win she has slumped out of tournaments in the early rounds of the competition, something the class acts of Henin, Graf and Seles would never have tolerated.
More recently, however, it has been another Serbian, Jelena Jankovic, who has been grabbing the headlines with consecutive victories at Stuttgart, Beijing and Moscow. The tenacious young woman knocked Serena Williams off the throne of women’s tennis after she claimed the top spot with her successful US Open challenge.
At this point in time Jankovic deserves the honours of being the leading lady of the courts and will head to the Zurich Open today as the hot favourite to claim a 4th victory in Swtzerland.
Sports bookmaker, StanJames, is currently offering the following odds on the outcome of the WTA Zurich Open - Venus Williams 11/4, Jelena Jankovic 7/2, Caroline Wozniacki 8/1 and Ana Ivanovic 8/1.

It has been a painful year for the former world number one, Roger Federer and his legions of fans but the 27 year old Swiss Master refused to bow to the pressures of both his primary nemesis, Rafael Nadal and the man hot on his heels, Novak Djokovic, at the final grand slam of the year.
Federer, against all odds, claimed his 13th grand slam title at Flushing Meadows and is arguably on his way back to full fitness and fighting form.
He will be out with the best in Madrid at the week-end in an attempt to claim his first Masters Series title of the season. He will clearly be one of the favourites as the hard courts of the Spainish tournament suit his playing style and he has already caimed the kudos of the third last Masters Series event of the year, in 2006.
Rafael Nadal, who was elevated to the best tennis player in the world with his French Open and Wimbledon wins, may struggle to make his mark on home turf as hard courts are not his preferred surface and this season his only two Masters Series wins have both been on clay.
The fans will be baying for a head-to-head between the two maestros of the game and odds are Federer may just be back at his best to claim the title in Madrid.
Irish bookmaker, Paddy Power, currently has a variety of tennis betting odds for the ATP Kremlin and the ATP Stockholm tournaments. Betting odds for the Masters Series in Madrid to be held from 11-19 October will be available soon.

All of Britain will be waiting impatiently for the start of the delayed grand slam final at Flushing Meadows this afternoon when their number one man will walk out onto centre court at the Arthur Ashe Stadium brimming with confidence after his crushing defeat of Rafael Nadal yesterday.
Murray’s First Bite at the Grand Slam Cherry
It will be Murray’s first bite of a grand slam cherry and the odds are very much in his favour. He has met his opponent, former number one, Roger Federer, three times in his career and surprisingly has the better results - 2-1. All the contests have been on hard court and their latest battle took place in Dubai earlier this year when Murray cruised to an easy three set victory.
Murray has played some of his best tennis leading into the finals of the US Open but the one problem that may hamper his rise up the ATP ranking ladder even further could be his fitness levels. He has not had the advantage of a full rest day like his rival, Federer, and his fitness has often been questioned by tennis pundits.
Murray Moves to Number Four!
Whatever the outcome of today’s final, Murray will reach a career high on the ATP ranking, rising to number four, one adrfit of Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.
UK bookmaker, betfred, is offering a sumptious range of betting options on the US Open Men’s Final - twenty in total- including the fastest serve and whether there will be a tie break. After his remarkable performance against the French Open, Wimbledon and Beijing Olympic champion, Murray clearly has the whole of Britain backing him with odds of 6/4 compared to Roger Federer at 8/15.

Not so long ago the thought of either Williams’ sister claiming one more grand slam to add to their glittering array of majors titles would have been relegated to dream land but with the recent demise of the number one seed, Ana Ivanovic, at the US Open and the no show of the 2006 champion, Maria Sharapova, the odds are clearly in one of their favours.
Who will be mentally stronger on the Day?
The two will meet this evening at the Arthur Ashe Stadium and, to be honest, either of them could win the quarter final - they are particularly well-matched, both preferring the aggressive approach to the game and it will all probably boil down to which of the sisters is physically fitter and mentally stronger on the day.
Venus showed the world she is not quite ready to be written off when she claimed her fifth Wimbledon singles crown and then went on to win the doubles as well with her little sister, her prime adversary in today’s clash at Flushing Meadows. She did make short work of Serena in London, winning the title in straight sets, but today will be an entirely different challenge.
Serena showing Form
Although Serena has not won any majors this year, she is cleary playing some formidable tennis at the moment, having bagged three WTA titles this season already. Both sisters have won in New York on two occasions and Serena has claimed one more grand slam title than her sister, Venus - to date she has claimed eight titles at the majors of tennis.
Local online bookmaker, sportingbet, has a variety of bets on the outcome of the match including the total number of games, the first set winner and odds on each set. Current odds on the match are Serena 3/4 & Venus 19/20.
