The Caulfield Guineas is the first major group 1 race run annually during the course of Australia’s Spring Racing Carnival. Modelled on the English 2,000 Guineas Classic, the Caulfield Cup is open to 3 year old thoroughbred colts and fillies, and is run over a distance of 1 mile at Melbourne’s Caulfield Racecourse.
The Caulfield Cup is one of the oldest races in Australia and has been run continually since 1881. The race is one of the few major Australian thoroughbred races to have borrowed directly from the English Classics, and it is therefore one of the few major set-weight races in Australian thoroughbred racing. The race awards a purse of AS$1 million, one of the largest prizes available in Australian racing.
