The Moonee Valley Racecourse is one of the premier racing facilities in the city of Melbourne, and the host for the third leg of the Spring Racing Carnival, the Moonee Valley Spring Carnival. Affectionately known as ‘Money Valley’ by the residents of Melbourne, the racecourse is best known for hosting the Cox Plate, the weights-for-age championship of Australia.
The Moonee Valley Racecourse facilities are located just 6 km from central Melbourne in the suburb of Moonee Ponds. Whilst the Moonee Valley Racecourse can’t compete with Flemington Racecourse in terms of spectator capacity, it offers spectators first class viewing and hospitality facilities, and offers a more intimate experience of thoroughbred racing in Melbourne.
Racetrack Layout and Description
Moonee Valley Racecourse features a square, turf track with a circumference of 1805 metres. The left-handed course features a StrathAyr Turf System with a sand foundation and mesgh (mesh?) supporting the upper rootzone, to improve track drainage.
The course is noted for its short straight, with the 173 metre run-in being the shortest straight of any Australian racetrack. Racehorses that successfully adapt to the unique layout of the course, with its relatively tight turns, tend to score excellent records there.
The draw has a minor impact on the outcome of races at the Moonee Valley Racecourse, with the exception of handicaps, in which heavily weighted racehorses can struggle when drawn on barrier 1. Ground conditions at the course tend to vary between good and slow, with excellent drainage ensuring most races take place on good ground.
The Moonee Valley Racecourse can accommodate 38,000 spectators in its grandstands, with corporate boxes offering room for another 1,200 spectators. The Moonee Valley Racecourse boasts first class catering and dining facilities, and also offers function facilities. The racecourse hosts both day and evening meetings.
Moonee Racecourse History
Moonee Valley Racecourse has been hosting thoroughbred races for over a century, with the first races hosted at the racecourse in 1883. The flat areas of Moonee Ponds were first set aside for racing by William Cox, who used the barren ground to set up a racecourse to rival the facilities offered at Flemington.
