Flemington Spring Carnival

The Flemington Spring Carnival is the highlight of the Australian thoroughbred racing season. Scheduled annually for the first week of October, and for early November, the Flemington Spring Carnival features four of the most important race meetings in Australia, as well as four thoroughbred races of international importance.

Victoria Derby

The Victoria Derby is the first of the feature races run during the Flemington Spring Carnival. The race is run on the Saturday prior to the running of the Melbourne Cup and is recognised as the most important set-weight race for 3 year old thoroughbred racehorses in Australia.

Melbourne Cup

The Melbourne Cup attracts the most extensive international coverage of any Australian thoroughbred race, and also lures enormous crowds to Flemington Racecourse. The race is traditionally held on the first Tuesday in November (a public holiday in Melbourne), and attracts some of the finest 3 year old and above stayers in international thoroughbred racing.

VRC Oaks

The VRC Oaks, or Crown Oaks, is the biggest fillies’ race of the Australian racing season. The event attracts the largest crowds of any Flemington Spring Carnival race, with crowds in excess of 100,000 spectators packing into Flemington Racecourse for ‘Ladies Day’. The VRC Oaks meeting is held on the Thursday after the Melbourne Cup.

VRC Stakes

The VRC Stakes brings the curtain down on the Flemington Spring Carnival. The race is run on the Saturday after the running of the VRC Oaks, and is held on Flemington Racecourse’s ‘Family Day’. The race itself is the most prestigious handicap thoroughbred race in Australia, and is run over a distance of 1600 metres.

Flemington Spring Carnival Betting

The Flemington Spring Carnival attracts punters from around the globe, due to the high profile of the feature races run during its four meetings. Antepost betting markets for the Melbourne Cup are readily available at international bookmakers throughout the year whilst bookmakers in Australia can be relied upon to provide early odds on the other three feature races of the Carnival.

Due to the fact that an increasing number of international entries are included in the Spring Racing Carnival every year, many punters choose to wait for the completion of the Classics in Ireland, France and England before placing their bets on the Spring Racing Carnival. Form from these series’ can then be used to assess selection in the Spring Racing Carnival betting markets.
