The Fed Cup

The Fed Cup is the equivalent of the Davis Cup in women’s tennis. The Fed Cup was set up to compliment the Davis Cup in 1963, when the International Tennis Federation celebrated its 50th anniversary. The event is the biggest international team competition in women’s tennis.

The Fed Cup features hundreds of national women’s tennis teams in its global structure. However, the bulk of media and public attention is the focus on the Fed Cup’s World Group, which features 16 of the strongest women’s tennis teams in the world. Places in this group are not guaranteed, with teams subject to relegation and promotion during the course of each Fed Cup Season.

Fed Cup fixtures in the World Group are played over several weekends spread throughout the year. Teams participate in 5 match home-and-away ties, with each tie comprising four singles matches and a doubles match.

Fed Cup History

The idea of an international women’s team tennis tournament dates back to 1919. Although the idea received a lukewarm reception, fixtures between the top women’s players in England and the United States were nevertheless organised for several years.

In 1962 the International Tennis Federation began taking proposals to set up an international women’s team tournament seriously. Thanks largely to the efforts of one Mary Mardwicke Hare, the ITF agreed to organize the first tournament in 1963, to coincide with its 50th anniversary.

The Fed Cup has undergone a number of sponsorship and format changes since 1963. The tournament has generally followed the lead of the Davis Cup, assimilating changes that were successfully implemented in the men’s team tournament.

Fed Cup Winners

While only 11 countries have claimed the Fed Cup since its inception in 1963, wins in the tournament have been far more equitably shared than in the Davis Cup. The United States has won the most titles at the event, taking the Fed Cup 17 times. Australia has won 7 titles, while Spain and Czechoslovakia boast 5 titles apiece.
