The Sony Ericsson Open is the most important event on the WTA Tour other than the grand slams. Often referred to as the ‘5th grand slam’, the event makes up the women’s draw at the Miami Masters. The Sony Ericsson Open is played at Crandon Park Tennis Center in Miami, on outdoor hard court.
The Sony Ericsson Open features a large draw of 96 players. A prize fund of $3,45 million is available, making it the richest Tier I tournament on the WTA Tour. The event was first played in 1985, and has since undergone several changes in sponsorship.
