The Qatar Open is the first Tier I tennis event contested by the members of the WTA every season. The event is played at Khalifa International Tennis Complex in Doha. The tournament features 56 of the best players in women’s tennis, with a substantial prize fund of $2,5 million, ensuring that the finest players in the WTA are always in attendance.
The Qatar Open was created as recently as 2001, when the first tournament was contested as a Tier III event. Increases in prize money have resulted in the tournament being upgraded twice before moving to Tier I status in 2008.
