The Madrid Masters is the 8th stop on the Masters Series tour contested annually by the members of the ATP Tour. The Madrid Masters is played on hard court at the Madrid Arena, and is scheduled for early October as a preparatory event to the US Open.
The Madrid Masters is a relatively small tournament, with the main draw featuring only 24 qualifiers. Despite being smaller than several other Masters Series events, the Madrid Masters still draws a star-studded field and offers a substantial tournament purse of $2,45 million.
Madrid Masters History
The Madrid Masters is the successor to a Masters Series event first held in Stockholm, Sweden. The tournament was played at three different locations during its early history, moving to Essen in 1995, before settling in Stuttgart in 1996.
In 2002 the decision was made to transfer the tournament to Madrid, giving Spain its first Masters Series event. The move was an unqualified success, with tens of thousands of Spaniards attending the inaugural Madrid Masters.
In 2003 Juan Carlos Ferroro became the first local player to win the tournament, providing a massive boost to the profile of the tournament in Spain. Two years later, over 100,000 spectators attended the tournament as Rafael Nadal became the second Spaniard to win the Madrid Masters.
Madrid Masters Betting
The Madrid Masters betting markets open during the week prior to the tournament. The event is well covered by UK sportsbooks, with punters able to access a full range of tennis betting options. Sportsbooks with a special focus on continental Europe, such as bwin, can be expected to offer some exciting specials for the event.
Match betting is a good tennis betting option to choose when placing money on the Madrid Masters. The Madrid Masters is known to produce upset wins, with top local players often coming to the fore and defeating higher ranked opponents. This makes betting on favourites in outright winner bets risky, but punters can benefit from good odds when betting on talented emerging players.
