The Hamburg Masters is the final clay court fixture of the Masters Series. The event takes place annually in May, and is hosted at the Am Rothenbaum tennis complex in the German city of Hamburg. The tournament offers a prize fund of $2,45 million.
The Hamburg Masters presently attracts a main draw of 24 players, and boasts the high quality entries typical of all the Masters Series events.
The future of the event is presently in peril, with organisers attempting to stave off a move to have the tournament downgraded from Masters Series status and replaced by a Masters tournament in China.
Hamburg Masters History
The first Hamburg Masters series was played in 1892. At the time, few tennis facilities existed in Hamburg, and the event was hosted on unused ice skating rinks. The area in which the tournament was hosted was slowly developed alongside the tournament itself, giving rise to the top class Am Rothenbaum facilities that now host the modern Hamburg Masters.
The Hamburg Masters was abandoned during the Second World War, which took a heavy toll on German sportsmen. The tournament was resurrected in 1950. During the post war years the Hamburg Masters often experienced weather delays, and the tournament date was finally swapped with that of the Rome Open in 1990, ending weather interruptions to play.

Hamburg Masters Winners
Since the advent of the open era the Hamburg Masters has been won by some of the best players on the ATP Tour. Roger Federer holds the modern record for most wins at the Hamburg Masters, with four Hamburg Masters titles to his name. However, it is unlikely that the tournament record of seven victories set by Otto Froitzheim between 1907 and 1925 will ever be broken.
