Who will be the next Mambo King, Jive Bunny or Salsa Sovereign?

The BAFTA nominated talent show, Strictly Come Dancing, has broken records with monotonous regularity and this is unlikely to change in the very near future.

Over 12 Million Viewers Tune In

At its peak in 2006 the TV programe, showcasing dancing in all its various guises, attracted over 12 million whooping fans and although there was a slight dip in the ratings a year on, it remains the main course of prime time TV in the UK and for that matter, the rest of the world!

Professional ballroom dancers join up with selected celebrities in an effort to claim the top spot but it is not only the panel of judges who decide on each team’s fate, it is the TV audience too. Each couple performs a number of different genres of dance including Mambo, Salsa, Swing and jive as well as the more sedate waltz and foxtrot and the judges allocate points out of ten. The couple with the lowest score at the end of the night is eliminated.

New Series will be the longest

In the past, the programme, in its entirety, has lasted in the vicinity of 8 weeks with celebrities taking time out to be coached in the various forms of dance. The show has proved to be such a success that the producers have opted for a 14 week schedule, virtually double that of all the prior series!

Apart from the sheer enjoyment of watching accomplished dancers glide and bump their way across the floor, it is the entertainment factor of watching the likes of former Manchester United goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel, doing his ‘thang’ or retired English scrum half, Matt Dawson, tripping the light fantastic but not all sportsmen have two left feet – ex-English cricketers Darren Gough and Mark Ramprakash have come out tops, both winning a series!

The judges, arguably not ‘hanging’ judges, are expected to remain in the dock this time for the sixth in the series and they include professional choreographer, Bruno Tonioli, Australian dancer, choreographer and theatre director, Craig Revel Horwood, notorious for his toughness during the scoring process and the hilariously funny Len Goodman.

Although the dates for the long awaited 6th series are still to confirmed, if the show follows the normal trend, then October 2008 is the time to edge closer to the TV set and the bookmakers!
