The Magners League, previously known as the Celtic League, is a major European club rugby tournament that functions as the equivalent of a top-flight domestic championship for clubs from Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
The Magners League comprises 10 teams, 2 from Scotland and 4 each from Wales and Ireland. Each of the teams represents a region rather than a specific club, and each is guaranteed its place in the Magners League with no relegation-promotion system enforced.
The Magners League follows a traditional league structure, with each team playing each of the other league members both at home and away. Currently the points leader at the end of the season wins the Magners League title, however, plans are afoot to introduce end of season playoffs to decide the champion.
Magners League Betting
The Magners League receives widespread coverage from UK sportsbooks, with Paddy Power giving special emphasis to a tournament in which Irish provinces tend to excel. Rugby fans can expect to benefit from a full spread of rugby betting options throughout the tournament, but ante-post odds are only likely to become available in the months immediately prior to the launch of the Magners League season.
Magners League History
The Magners League is the product of attempts by the Celtic nations to establish sound professional rugby structures, in a climate that saw many of the established clubs unable to adapt to the advent of the professional era in rugby.
Wales and Scotland were the first to join forces in 1999, when Edinburgh and Glasgow were incorporated into the Welsh Premier League. Two years later, Ireland made the decision to enter its provinces into the competition, giving birth to the Celtic League in 2001.
Although the League enjoyed financial success during its early years, the ongoing financial crisis amongst clubs in the region forced a restructuring of the competition in 2003. All three of the member unions agreed that theirs should be the only professional league in the region, resulting in the Welsh Rugby Union merging the country’s clubs into regional teams for the Celtic League.
The Celtic League was re-branded as the Magners League in 2006 after entering into a 5-year sponsorship deal with the brewer. The tournament has enjoyed significant growth during the last few seasons, with attendance figures increasing steadily and several member clubs establishing themselves as viable professional franchises.
Magners League Winners
Ireland and Wales have dominated the Magners League during its short history. Irish provinces have claimed four of the Magners League winners titles to date with every Irish province, bar Connacht, lifting the Magners Cup at least once.
The Wales based Ospreys and Ireland’s Leinster are the two most successful teams in the tournament, with two titles apiece. Scottish teams have not performed well in the Magners League to date, and Edinburgh’s second place finish in the 2003/2004 Magners League has thus far been the best result achieved by a Scottish franchise.
