The Currie Cup is South Africa’s premier domestic rugby tournament, as well as being the oldest and best-attended domestic rugby competition in the Southern Hemisphere. The first division is contested by eight teams, and concludes with the Currie Cup final, one of the annual rugby highlights.
The Currie Cup features a round-robin home and away format, with the top four teams progressing to the semi-finals at the conclusion of the league fixtures. The winning team from the second division can qualify for the premier division via a playoff with the lowest ranked team from this division.
Currie Cup History
The Currie Cup was established in 1889, when the newly formed South African Rugby Board decided to organise a tournament for provincial sides. The tournament acquired its name and trophy in 1982 when the Griqualand West team was awarded the Currie Cup by the touring British Lions, and this cup was subsequently donated to the South African Rugby Board.
For the first several decades of its existence the Currie Cup was played only intermittently, and dominated by the Western Province. It was only in the 1960s that the competition came into its own, as the northern regions of South Africa began producing strong competitive teams, and the Currie Cup became a regular fixture on the rugby calendar.
In the years since, an intense rivalry has developed between the teams from the central and North Western regions of South Africa and those from the Southern and Eastern, with these rivalries to some extent reflecting the distribution of English and Afrikaans speaking populations.
Currie Cup Betting
Most of the Currie Cup season is contested during the European rugby’s off-season, which means that the competition tends to become the primary focus of rugby betting markets in the United Kingdom. Many sportsbooks offer betting on the outright tournament winner, while some offer a wider selection of betting markets for high profile matches.
When betting on the Currie Cup it is always useful to have both a good grasp of the tournament’s history, as well as the current balance of power in South African rugby. The tournament is dominated by the five Super 14 franchises, and no teams other than the Bulls, Cheetahs and Western Province have won the Currie Cup since the turn of the Millennium.
