Rugby League World Cup

The Rugby League World Cup is the highest level international tournament within the sport of rugby league. The Rugby League Cup is the older of the two Rugby World Cups, and has been played at varying intervals since making its debut in France in 1954.

Ten nations contest the Rugby League World Cup. Hosting of the tournament is generally rotated between England, Australia and New Zealand where the rugby league code enjoys considerable support. These three countries are also the only three competitors to have won the Rugby League World Cup during its history.

Rugby League World Cup History

The first Rugby League World Cup was proposed and hosted by the French Rugby League. The tournament initially featured only the four test-playing nations of Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand and France, and ended with Great Britain winning the first title in Paris.

Since its inception the Rugby League World Cup has adopted several tournament formats and has been played intermittently, rather than every four years on a regular basis, the latter being the norm in World Cup tournaments for other team sports. The number of participants has also tended to vary from one tournament to the next, with anywhere from 4 to 16 teams participating in the Rugby League World Cup.

Australia has dominated the Rugby League World Cup since its inception by winning the tournament 9 times. Great Britain (which sometimes plays as England), was a force in the early years of the tournament, winning three title before 1972, but has since failed to win the tournament.

New Zealand has one Rugby League World Cup title to their credit, obtained when they upset Australia in the final of the 2008 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
