The Super League is Europe’s highest level rugby league tournament. Whilst the majority of the 14 participating clubs hail from the traditional rugby league stronghold of England’s North-West, the Super League also includes clubs from Wales, France and England’s South-East.
The Super League is regarded as the Northern hemisphere equivalent of the Australasian National Rugby League. As such the tournament embraces a similar format to that of the NRL, and the winners of the respective Grand Finals of each of these competitions meet once a year to contest the World Club Challenge.
The Super League is unique in that it is contested during the summer months, unlike other rugby tournaments which are played during the winter months. Participating clubs play each other home and away in a round robin tournament, with the top eight clubs progressing on to the Super League Finals Series.
The Super League Finals series is structured as a knockout tournament played over four weeks. The two winners of the qualifying semifinals meet in the Super League Grand Final, which is played at Old Trafford.

Super League History
The Super League Europe was created in 1996 by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation as part of his strategy to move the sport of rugby league onto pay-per-view television. The formation of the league was powered by News Corporation’s money, and funneled into participating clubs via a broadcasting rights deal.
The Super League was initially intended to feature a number of clubs formed by mergers between long standing English rugby league clubs. However, opposition to this arrangement led to the abandonment of the idea, and England’s best supported rugby league clubs were instead invited to join the league.
The tournament initially featured one French team, Paris St. Germain, which survived only a single season in the league. For the next decade the league was contested by English clubs, before the Perpignan-based Catalan Dragons were introduced into the tournament in 2005. In 2009 the Celtic Crusaders joined the Super League, becoming the first Welsh club to compete in the tournament.
