Victor Chandler Chase

The Victor Chandler Chase is one of the Grade 1 steeplechase highlights of the national hunt season, and one of the most prestigious national hunt races run at Ascot Racecourse. The race is run in January, and is also known as the Clarence House Chase.

The Victor Chandler Chase is open to 5-year-old and above national hunt racehorses. The event is run over a distance of 2 miles 1 furlong and features 13 fences. The distance marks the race out as a stepping stone for racehorses looking to compete successfully in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

Victor Chandler Chase Betting Tips

  • Maturity seems to be key to winning the Victor Chandler Chase. Over 70% of race winners have been over the age of 7.
  • Since the Victor Chandler Chase acquired Grade 1 status and dropped its weights, form has tended to be the most important factor in determining a winner. Betting on a top rated chaser in this race is therefore a good option.
  • Antepost favourites have faired poorly in the Victor Chandler Chase over its history, achieving a strike rate of less than 30%. However, the shift to Grade 1 status may reverse this trend, and there’s every chance the antepost betting markets will prove to be more accurate in coming years.
  • Punters willing to place their bets according to long term trends could consider laying the antepost favourite at a betting exchange like Betfair.

Victor Chandler Chase History

The Victor Chandler Chase was scheduled to make its debut in 1987 before frost put pay to the running of the inaugural race. Originally a handicap event, the race instead made its debut the following year and was run over a distance of 2 miles.

During the redevelopment of Ascot Racecourse the Victor Chandler Chase was moved to alternate venues. Upon its return to Ascot Racecourse in 2007 it was reclassified as a Grade 1 steeplechase, and the handicap was dropped from the race.

Due to the fact that it is an important stepping stone to the Queen Mother Champion Chase, the Victor Chandler Chase has recently been won by some of the leading 2 mile chasers in the sport. Prominent winners include Desert Orchid, Tamarinbleu and the impressive Master Minded.
