The Tolworth Hurdle is one of the United Kingdom’s most important races for novice hurdlers. The event is run at Sandown Racecourse in January, and is open to national hunt racehorses over the age of 4.
A distance 2 miles and 110 yards is covered during the course of the Tolworth Hurdle, with participants required to clear 8 hurdles during the course of the race. The event tends to attract racehorses being primed for appearances in the Cheltenham Festival’s Ballymore Properties Novices’ Hurdle.
The Tolworth Hurdle has been a part of the British national hunt racing calendar since 1976. The race is named after the small town of Tolworth, which is located in close proximity to Sandown Racecourse.
During its history the race has attracted several different sponsors, and was moved between Warwick, Wincanton and Ascot during the early years of the 21st century.
In recent years the Tolworth Hurdle has failed to produce future national hunt stars. However, this was not always the case with this Grade 1 race. One of the most famous winners of the Tolworth Hurdle was the legendary Desert Orchid, who won the race by 8 lengths before going on to a career that saw him win several of national hunt racing’s most prestigious steeplechases.
