The Ladbroke is the richest handicap hurdles race in national hunt racing. Run annually in December at Ascot Racecourse, the Ladbroke Hurdle awards over £150,000 in prize money, and attracts large fields that tend to include a number of the highest rated hurdlers in national hunt racing.
The Ladbroke was originally run at Leopardstown Racecourse in Ireland during the month of January. In 2001 the race was moved to Ascot Racecourse, before moving briefly to Sandown during the redevelopment of the Ascot facilities.
Weights: The last five winners of the Ladbroke have all been weighted in the 10st 9lbs to 11st 9lbs margin.
Age: The last five winners of the Ladbroke have all been aged between 5 and 7, with 5-year-olds winning the race on three occasions.
Odds: Winners of the past five races have been priced from 9/4 to 25/1 with four entries priced under 14/1. The antepost favourite has won the Ladbroke only three times in the last three decades.
Jockey: Jockeys from the strongest stables have dominated the Ladbroke in recent years, although none has managed to take more than one victory.
Trainer: Nicky Henderson has trained two Ladbroke winners in the past five years.
Ladbroke Tip: Like any handicap, the Ladbroke rarely adheres to market predictions. This marks the race as an ideal lay betting opportunity. Sign up with an exchange and lay the favourite.
Despite being a handicap, the Ladbroke’s status as the ‘Grand National’ of hurdles races means that the race often features high quality racehorses that often move onto greater things in national hunt racing.
Examples include recent winners Tamarinbleu, who went on to win the Victor Chandler Chase and the Paddy Power Gold Cup, and Jack the Giant, who has won several handicap chases and hurdles events.
