The Scilly Isles Novices Chase is a Grade 1 novices’ steeplechase run annually at Sandown Park Racecourse. The race is run over a distance of 2 miles 4½ furlongs and requires participants to clear 17 fences on their way to the finishing post.

Entry to the Scilly Isles Novices Chase is open to racehorses over the age of 5. While the quality of the field can be variable, the race has featured racehorses that went on to win widespread acclaim in other major Grade 1 races.

Many trainers use the event to prepare their novices for the Royal and SunAlliance Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

The Scilly Isles Novices Chase dates back to 1964. The race immediately proved itself as a nursery for Cheltenham Festival winners when inaugural champion Buona Notte went on to take the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

Some of national hunt racing’s greatest racehorses won the Scilly Isles Novices Chase before going on to win major races. Amongst the greatest champions produced by the race was Best Mate, who went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice.
