The Racing Post Chase is one of the most important races of the national hunt season. The race is run annually in February, and typically features the talents of runners aiming at victory in either the Cheltenham Gold Cup or Grand National.
The Racing Post Chase is a Grade 3 steeplechase handicap race. The race is hosted by Kempton Park racecourse over a distance of 3 miles. The Racing Post Chase is open to 5 year old and older national hunt racehorses, which are required to clear 18 fences during the course of the race.
The Racing Post Chase is a relatively new fixture on the national-hunt racing calendar. The race was conceived of and sponsored by the Racing Post daily, and was first run in 1988.
Racing Post Chase Betting
The Racing Post Chase is recognised as one of the most important handicap steeplechases in the United Kingdom. As such the race receives excellent coverage from all UK bookmakers, and generates big pool betting markets, which can be exploited at pool betting specialists such as totesports.
Punters betting on the Racing Post Chase tend to back runners who have achieved good results throughout the season and are priced well in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National betting markets. However, hype over a particular racehorse does not always translate into good performances in the Racing Post Chase, and long-odds outsiders have won several races.
Neither weight nor age seem to be important factors in determining which horses will emerge as winners in the Racing Post Chase. Recently, turf conditions have had more effect on the outcome of the race than any other factor, but punters have also benefited from backing horses with good records over a race distance of 3 miles.
Racing Post Chase Winners
The Racing Post Chase has a good record of producing winners who go on to capture major national hunt race titles. Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Desert Orchid, is the most famous racehorse to have won the Racing Post Chase, winning the race in 1990 before going on to claim victory at the Irish Grand National.
Phillip Hobbs has the best record of any trainer during the history of the Racing Post Chase, having trained three Racing Post Chase winners between 1999 and 2005. Amongst the jockeys Richard Johnson has the best record in the race, riding four Racing Post Chase winners since 2000.
