Punchestown Gold Cup

The Punchestown Gold Cup is the most prestigious Grade 1 steeplechase raced in Ireland. The race is run annually as one of the feature races of the Punchestown Festival, and attracts some of the most highly rated chasers in the sport of national hunt racing.

The Punchestown Gold Cup is run over a distance of 3 miles 1 furlong over Punchestown Racecourse and is open to 5-year-old and above racehorse. While the race is regarded as the Irish equivalent of the Cheltenham Gold Cup it is unusual for racehorses to participate in both events in a single season.

Punchestown Gold Cup Betting Tips

  • Punters seem to have an excellent handle on the Punchestown Gold Cup when it comes to predicting the race winner, with antepost favourites taking around 70% of race wins in the past decade – one of the highest success rates for favourites in British and Irish racing.
  • The majority of Punchestown Gold Cup winners have been aged between 7- and 9-years-old. Wins by racehorses under the age of 7 are rare, however, older racehorses do take the race on the odd occasion.
  • Antepost favourites for the Punchestown Gold Cup tend to offer relatively good value and are rarely backed below evens, making a straight outright best on a winner the best betting option for this race.
  • Another potentially lucrative Punchestown Gold Cup betting option is to place lay bets on the 2nd and 3rd placed entries in the betting markets, as the race tends to produce longer odds winners when not taken by the antepost favourite.

Punchestown Gold Cup History

The Punchestown Gold Cup was created in the hops of emulating the success and prestige of the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The race was first run in 1960, and soon began attracting the finest racehorses in the sport, with the legendary Arkle taking victory in 1963.

During its history the Punchestown Gold Cup has gone to several other famous national hunt racehorses, including Irish heroes Beef And Salmon and Florida Pearl. During the history of the event only two racehorses, Kicking King and War Of Attrition, have won both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Punchestown Gold Cup.
