The Paddy Power Gold Cup is one of the first big handicap races of the national hunt racing season. Run annually in mid-November, the Paddy Power Gold Cup gives national hunt racing fans their first opportunity to bets on some of the biggest name in the sport.
The Paddy Power Gold Cup is a Grade 3 handicap steeplechase run by 5 year old and above racehorses on the Old Course at Cheltenham Racecourse. The Paddy Power Gold Cup covers a distance of 2 miles 4½ furlongs, with competitors required to clear 15 fences during the race.
The Paddy Power Gold Cup was first run in 1960 as the Mackeson Gold Cup. During its history the race has attracted some of the finest racehorses in national hunt racing, with many winners going on to perform well at major races in the Cheltenham Festival.
Due to the short distance run, the Paddy Power Gold Cup is recognised as one of the fastest, most exciting races of the national hunt season.
Ante-post betting markets for the Paddy Power Gold Cup open several months in advance of the race, giving punters the opportunity to back some of the best known stables in national hunt racing at high odds. Pool betting is also on offer from top online pool betting specialists like totesports.
Picking a winner in the Paddy Power Gold Cup is no easy task, given the fact that the race is a handicap and the entries are mostly coming off their summer breaks. However, there are some basic pointers punters can look to when making their Paddy Power Gold Cup betting selections.
The first thing punters should take note of is that the top weight runner rarely wins the race, in fact a horse carrying more than 12st 10lbs last won the race in 1994. Also look out for runners with previous wins over the tough fences of Cheltenham Racecourse.
Only three racehorses have won the Paddy Power Gold Cup twice, namely Gay Trip, Half Free and Bradbury Star. Martin Pipe has won the Paddy Power Gold Cup more often than any other national hunt trainer, having taken the race on 8 occasions, with 6 of these victories coming in the last decade.
