The Long Walk Hurdle is one of the most important hurdles races of the first half of the national hunt season. The race takes place at Ascot Racecourse in December, and is regarded as one of the most important trial events for the Cheltenham Festival’s World Hurdle.
The Long Walk Hurdle is run over a distance of 3 miles 1 furlong, with 14 hurdles jumped during the course of the race. Entry to the Long Walk Hurdle is restricted to 4-year-old and above national hunt racehorses.
The Long Walk Hurdle was first raced in 1956 as a handicap race run over a distance of 3 miles 1½ furlongs. In 1971 the Long Walk Hurdle was classified as a conditions race, and was only classified as a Grade 1 event for the 1990 national hunt season.
Despite the fact that the Long Walk Hurdle serves as an unofficial trial race for the World Hurdle, it has produced few World Hurdle Champions during its history. Those that have won the Long Walk Hurdle and then gone on to win the World Hurdle include some of the greatest hurdlers of recent memory, and include four times winner Barracouda and 2005 winner My Way De Solzen.
