The Lexus Chase is one of the richest and most prestigious national hunt races run in Ireland. The Grade 1 event is raced during the course of the Leopardstown Racecourse annual Christmas Meeting and attracts entries from throughout the United Kingdom.
Entry to the Lexus Chase is restricted to racehorses over the age of 5. The race covers a distance of 3 miles over Leopardstown Racecourse and features 17 fences. The race often attracts at least one entry rated amongst the top 5 in the United Kingdom, with entries often going on to run in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The Lexus Chase was first run in 1986 as the Black & White Whisky Champion Chase over a distance of 2½ miles. The race underwent a transformation in 1992 when Ericsson took over sponsorship of the event and its distance was increased to 3 miles.
Lexus, the present sponsor of the race, came onboard in 2004. The final change in sponsorship saw a substantial increase in prize money, and with this came an improvement in the quality of the racehorses competing in this event.
The Lexus Chase has been won by several well known racehorses in the last decade. Notable champions include two times Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Best Mate, and 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Denman.
